The Time is NOW.

It is Aloha Friday my friends and we continue the conversation of becOMing our best selves as the way to ultimate Well-Being. I have been part of the midwifery to the birth of a new consciousness, helping others see that being true to themselves fuels the joy of feeling whole and being hOMe.

Starting a new year gives us a chance to begin again, to clear the clutter of the holiday stress that has left our inner and outer spaces heavier than usual. Putting away holiday decorations, I am aware of how cleansing it can be to not reclutter the now empty areas , how I can allow the shelves and mantels to reflect calm instead of clutter. I can choose objects that make me relax, laugh or remind me of the love of family and friends. My pantry is emptied of tempting treats leftover from the December revelry. January is a great month to start a whole food cleanse lose a couple of holiday pounds and feed my body the fuel and energy it needs to keep me fortified for winter.
I begin to go deeper inward, reading and studying, planning how to share what I have learned about living well, the grief of losing a loved one reinforcing the fact that life is all too short, that there is no time like the present, that all we have is NOW. The need to serve myself and others in this time of great trepidation, fear, sadness and anxiety is accelerating. Our world is unrecognizable at times and our attention to the constant chaos drains us of energy and fuels our discontent. How we choose to restore our own sense of homeostasis, fun, joy and well-being is a testament to our resiliency and intention. It is a practice, this state of well-being. Ask yourself, what is ONE thing I can do today that will enhance my life? What are you waiting for? If there is anything you want to change, what ONE action step could you take to bring you forward? Remember, the rEVOLution of becOMing is here. When one of us makes a change, it pebbles out in waves, affecting others as well. It is part of becOMing whole.
On this Aloha Friday, make the connection from your heart’s desires to the action step that can lead you to living your best life. Until next time, Aloha

A very Mindful Monday and Happy New Year’s Eve Everyone!

Ah, as the clocks tick the last tock of 2018 and Auld Lang Syne sings its mournful song, we bid Aloha to the old and ring in the new. As a kid, I remember crying right before the clock struck midnight because I found it so difficult to say goodbye to a year. I was so nostalgic!
Since then, there have been many years that were easier to leave behind then others. Now, I look forward to a fresh start, a new time and chance to begin anew, set my intentions for the year and live my purpose, to experience love in all of it’s expressions.
I believe Michelle Obama has set the tone for us in 2019. Who are we becOMing? The rising tide of evolving consciousness starts with each of us. We are now part of the rEVOLUTION of becOMing, moving forward, yet inward, listening to our Hearts and Inner Voices that guide us to being our Best selves. Last year I declared 2018 The Year of
the Woman and Wow did that ever come to pass.
I have learned and observed through study and coaching that we are rising together, fuller, more empowered than ever, nourishing ourselves in order to feed each other as we grow stronger, in mind, body and spirit.
We are eating better, learning food is our medicine and what is best for our bodies, knowing one size does not fit all.
We learned that 70 % of our immune system is in our gut and the new key to wellness is feeding the good bacteria and not sugaring the bad bacteria.
We are learning that food is not the only way we feed ourselves. We know we need to limit the negativity in our world in order to feel calm. We learned that what we watch, read, share with friends can impact our moods, digestion and health.
We know mindfulness has helped us in our daily lives as well as in the workplace, where being present helps us to listen first, not react, that cooperation and teamwork allows everyone to feel worthy, important and more productive.
We are loving and caring for ourselves, knowing that in order to nourish others and live our purpose, we must honor ourselves first.
We are listening to our hearts, examining past beliefs that no longer serve us.
We are filling our social calendar with the family members and friends that in turn nurture and feed us with love, positivity and connection. We are learning that eating well, moving our bodies and quieting our minds through meditation is a start but it is not what makes us whole. We know the time has come to integrate a vision of possibility for what and who will bring us joy, compassion, service, humility and connection. Our livelihood and personal life becom
e partners in pursuing wellness and fulfillment. There is no separation of joy . It should be felt in what you do, where you go, and how you live and work.
We are no longer waiting for …x… to make us happy. There is only NOW. We have learned to celebrate the joy of new babies born, new jobs and experiences that fill our souls, engaging retirement, and we have felt the passing of parents, friends and loved ones and the grief that accompanies that loss. We have learned to be grateful for the time we have had with all our lovies, past, present and future.
When we have experienced what life has given us and our part in it, our wisdom and resilience serves as the tools to begin anew, with a new vision, a new intention to inspire ourselves and continue our becOMing because we have no choice. Evolving is our only way hOMe. It brings us those AHA moments of beauty, love, discovery, faith and joy. It becomes our life practice. As we expand our consciousness, we also bask in the warmth of our heart’s hOMe, that feeling of total ahhhness where Life is so damn good. We are living our best lives. Here’s to all the wonder, gratitude and love that 2019 will bring to you and and to all of us.

World Diabetes Day!

In honor of World Diabetes Day, I share with you great information from Dr. Brain Mowll as my gift to you looking at the root of Type 2 Diabetes and Insulin Resistance.
What’s At The Root Of Type 2 Diabetes?
There are several types of diabetes, including type 1, type 2, gestational, and pre- diabetes. With the exception of type 1, which is typically due to damaged beta cells in the pancreas, which make insulin, the majority of diabetes cases start with insulin resistance in the liver, muscles, and other organs.

  • Insulin resistance is a pervasive condition that is associated with not only diabetes, but weight gain, hormone problems, brain dementia, and cancer. It is typically present for years or even decades prior to someone becoming officially diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, the type that used to be called “adult onset” diabetes because it usually occurs later in life and is more associated with lifestyle habits than genetics.

There is many causes and contributors to insulin resistance, and usually several factors are at work. Among the biggest reasons why someone develops insulin resistance are:

  •  a poor diet, rich in processed carbohydrates, that leads to increased insulin secretion
  •  being overweight or obese, particularly central adiposity (apple-shape weight gain)
  •  some genetic factors (meaning they have inherited the trait that leads to IR)
  •  a stressful lifestyle which stimulates cortisol release that raises blood sugar
  •  lack of optimal physical activity and/or sedentary lifestyle
  •  improvarious illnesses, infections, and immune dysfunction (gut problems are a common problem)
  •  certain medications can also add to growing insulin problems
Insulin resistance is a major contributor to a condition referred to as “metabolic syndrome”. When someone is diagnosed with having metabolic syndrome, this usually means they are experiencing problems managing blood sugar levels, are likely overweight, and may have high blood pressure or cholesterol.
Often the biggest causes of metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, and eventually type 2 diabetes is being overweight and eating a poor diet that is high in sugar and processed foods.
These foods increase inflammation throughout the body, which causes the body to react by creating chemicals (called cytokines) that block insulin from properly doing its job. An inflammatory diet consists of refined carbohydrates (pasta, bread, white potato products, and cereal for example) and foods high in processed ingredients and sugar (ice cream, candy, cookies, and soda for example).
Insulin is an important hormone in our body that is responsible for controlling how much sugar remains in our blood after we eat something. Insulin is made by the pancreas exclusively and its most important job is to remove glucose (from

carbohydrates in food as well as the sugar release by the liver) away from the blood and feeds it to the muscles and cells so they can use the sugar as energy, keeping our bodies functioning and moving.
When someone starts to experience resistance to insulin, they are no longer able to properly respond to the hormone. To compensate, the pancreas produces more and more insulin until it can no longer keep up. Eventually, even high levels of insulin are not enough to remove and use sugar from the blood properly, so the blood sugar spikes very easily and can remain high for a dangerous amount of time, causing pre- diabetes, and type 2 diabetes. In addition, this leads to more weight gain (insulin causes the body to store fat), inflammation in the blood vessels, heart disease and stroke risk, and damage to the small blood vessels in the eyes, kidneys, and feet.
To prevent or reverse pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes, it’s essential to increase sensitivity to insulin. Once there is less insulin resistance, insulin levels can fall, and it can become easier to lose weight, reduce inflammation, and control blood sugar.
